Most networks remain manual because they lack a unified and reliable network source of truth. In this article, experts from IPXO, NetBox Labs and NetOmate explain how organizations can build real automation by aligning data, people and processes – not by chasing a perfect tool.

Most networks are still run by people clicking through device UIs – even as we talk about AI, intent-based networking, and “self-driving” infrastructure.

According to Gartner, more than 70% of networks today remain largely manual. In practice, that means spreadsheets, tribal knowledge, and “just one more SSH session” still stand behind many critical services.

To unpack why, IPXO Co-Founder Vincentas Grinius hosted a webinar with Mark Coleman (NetBox Labs) and Bassem Al-Sabri (NetOmate). Together, they explored what a network source of truth really is, why the “single source of truth” idea is misleading, and how teams can move from click-based operations to safe, data-driven automation.

Quick Learnings:

  • Automation fails without trusted data. A network source of truth prevents drift, conflicts, and unexpected outages. Tools alone will not.
  • A single source of truth is usually a myth. Real networks have multiple authoritative systems. The key is to define which system is authoritative for each dataset and keep them aligned.
  • Start small to move faster. Automate one painful, repeatable workflow tied to a business outcome, then expand from there.
  • Let the data model follow reality. Extract the real parameters from configs and operations first, then formalize them into a practical network data model.
  • Registry and IP allocation truth matters. If WHOIS and RPKI do not match internal IPAM data, automation becomes unreliable.

The truth about the “single source of truth” myth

The idea of a tool that contains everything about your ecosystem – or a perfect network source of truth – has existed for decades. It promises clean data, aligned teams, predictable automation, and seamless governance. In theory, one platform owns all information about devices, interfaces, IPs, routing, topology and lifecycle.

But as IPXO’s guests explained, no real network works this way.

NetBox Labs’ Mark Coleman emphasized that networks naturally evolve into distributed systems of record. Virtualization data lives in vCenter. Wi-Fi settings are in Mist. DNS/IPAM may be somewhere entirely different. Monitoring, logging, and routing policy often reside in separate operational islands. Each holds real, authoritative truth for its domain.

The industry’s issue is not the absence of a truth –it’s the presence of many truths, updated by different teams at different times for different reasons.

The question isn’t how to force all data into one tool. The question is how to stay in control of all the places where truth already exists.

Rather than chasing a single source of truth, modern teams are adopting a network source of truth model, where different systems remain authoritative for different datasets yet operate in sync.

Why many teams struggle to start network automation

Automation often feels intimidating because it is presented as an all-or-nothing proposition. Full YAML data models, CI/CD pipelines, intent-driven orchestration, and this complexity discourages teams before they begin.

NetOmate’s Bassem Al-Sabri argued that real transformation starts small. The fastest path to a functioning network source of truth is not a perfect architecture but a single meaningful improvement.

Instead of designing a decade-long data model, teams should automate recurring tasks such as IP allocation, BGP neighbor verification, or monitoring updates. These immediate gains build confidence and create the operational momentum needed to expand further.

Data modeling: meaningful only after understanding your reality

Building a network source of truth requires structured data. But organizations often get stuck trying to design the “perfect data model” before they even automate their first workflow.

This sequence should be reversed.

Al-Sabri explained that the best data models emerge directly from actual configurations. Removing CLI syntax reveals core parameters: prefixes, neighbors, ASNs, VLANs, descriptions, interface roles, and policies. Over time, these parameters form a realistic, operationally grounded model that reflects the real network – not an abstract ideal.

Industry standards like OpenConfig offer guidance, but they shouldn’t be the starting point. Internal truth must be understood before adopting external models.

A business lens is essential for building automation buy-in

A surprising obstacle to creating a functional network source of truth is communication. Network engineering and executive leadership frequently speak different languages.

IPXO’s Vincentas Grinius explained that engineers describe problems in technical terms – routing protocols, RPKI mismatches, or dual-stack debt – while leadership evaluates risk, cost, expansion speed, and customer impact.

Automation must therefore be expressed in terms leadership understands: fewer outages, faster provisioning, reduced operational risk, increased visibility and improved audit posture.

Without this alignment, even excellent technical initiatives struggle to gain approval.

The invisible foundation: IP allocations and registry truth

A network source of truth must begin long before a device is configured. It begins with IP allocation data – the resources assigned by RIRs and LIRs.

Many organizations begin automation inside their network but ignore the origin of their IP identity. Registry entries, WHOIS data, delegated prefixes, historical allocations, and RPKI states all contribute to the foundational truth. These records are often misaligned, especially for ISPs and telcos that grow through acquisitions.

This results in:

  • orphaned or duplicate prefixes
  • conflicting registry information
  • absent or outdated ROAs
  • routing inconsistencies that automation cannot fix

Without harmonizing this external truth, internal automation will fail. This is where IPXO plays a unique role: giving operators visibility and control of the full lifecycle of their IP resources.

Emerging accelerators: open source and AI

Open source continues to be the easiest entry point for building a practical network source of truth. Tools like NetBox, open-source IPAM, Containerlab, and automation frameworks allow teams to prototype quickly without procurement overhead.

AI amplifies this momentum. The experts shared how they use AI for:

  • analyzing logs
  • generating configuration drafts
  • validating design choices
  • summarizing complex operational states

But all agreed that AI is not yet ready to independently operate production networks. The limitation isn’t the AI – it’s the absence of strong automated test frameworks in most organizations. Until validation is robust, AI remains a co-pilot, not a pilot.

Where the future of network automation is heading

Looking forward, Coleman expects the industry to mature the way DevOps did. Expectations are high, sometimes unrealistically so. But over time, patterns solidify. More engineers will learn software fundamentals; more vendors will offer integrated validation, discovery and assurance; and more enterprises will share their automation successes publicly.

But the foundation remains the same: automation succeeds only when there is a trustworthy network source of truth beneath it.

How organizations can start building a network source of truth today

Even the smallest company can begin building reliable network automation today by taking a practical, incremental approach:

  • Pick one repetitive, high-impact workflow and automate it.
  • Identify where the relevant truth lives (device, IPAM, registry, controller).
  • Define which system should become authoritative for that dataset.
  • Add version control and lightweight review and testing.
  • Communicate business impact early and often.
