What Do Different DNS Records Mean

Here are the meanings of some of the most common DNS Resource Records.

  • A: Address Record associates a domain name to a numerical IP address
  • AAAA: Address Record that associates a domain name to a numerical IPv6 address, specifically
  • CNAME: Canonical Name Record aliases one domain name to another
  • MX: Mail Exchange Record explains how to send an email to your domain
  • LOC: Location Record determines the geographical location of your domain
  • SPF: Sender Policy Framework Record shows a list of IP addresses that can send emails on your domain’s behalf
  • SRV: Service Record provides the hostname, location and port number of the domain name
  • TXT: Text Record stores information about a DNS server
